Service Coordinator

Elaine Kerry

I have worked at SMT GB since 2001 in a variety of roles; from Customer Support Secretary to IT First Line Support (Helpdesk) and now as a Service Co-ordinator for Duxford Depot after deciding I wanted a fresh challenge.

My job role is very varied, and includes sending work instructions to the Workshop, opening and closing orders for customers and administering holidays and other absences for the employees of the Workshop.

The main skills needed in my current role are good communication skills as you would need to talk to customers and give instructions to the Workshop employees. You also need to be well organised and a good influencer.

Experience isn’t necessarily needed for this job role as full training is given to you by SMT GB; however previous experience in administration is useful. During my time in IT I was given the most training as it was quite a technical role but in my current job I’ve had training in the processes and systems used.

The biggest challenge in this role has been getting to grips with the new IT software which was introduced across the company (IDMS) whilst at the same time, learning about my new job.

The most enjoyable part of my job is having the regular contact with our customers and Engineers. I also enjoy being an Employee Council Representative, whereby I have an influence on business matters which affect employees, such as policies and benefits.

I have been given a large amount of support from my immediate colleagues and the company as a whole. This is one of the key benefits of working for SMT GB, as well as the opportunity to be able to carry out new training when it is required.

I would recommend SMT GB as a place to work. It is an all-round good, supportive business, no matter what area you are looking to work in.
