Our power, our planet – Earth Day
SMT is dedicated to reaching achievable goals for sustainability in the coming years, especially related to the environment. We have set specific reduction targets primarily linked to our fleet of vehicles and the energy consumption of our sites.
Although SMT ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) strategy is global in scope, its implementation includes tailored timelines by entities to ensure compliance and effectiveness across all regions, as we are present in the United States, in Africa, and in Europe. Indeed, due to stronger regulations in Europe, some SMT entities have been collecting data and implementing processes for several years.

Reducing our energy consumption
In order to reduce our energy consumption, and decarbonize it, SMT has implemented several local initiatives on different sites.
In Great Britain and the Netherlands, 2 of our sites have installed solar panels, respectively at Birmingham in 2024 and at Emmeloord in 2023. The panels will supply a proportion of our sites’ electricity needs, and in Great Britain, the surplus will be exported by to the national grid. These installations are the first step on large scale on-site renewable energy generation.
Promoting greener commuting
In Europe, our company car fleet policy is mandating to move to full electric vehicles for all our offices since 2024. In Belgium, Luxembourg, Great Britain and the Netherlands, our combustion and hybrid company cars are being replaced by fully electric.
Renovations were made in Vilvoorde, Belgium to adapt a container into a charging point for electric bikes to encourage cycling to work. The charging points are powered by green energy (from wind power, solar energy, renewable thermal energy, and hydropower…) provided by the grid for the whole site since 2024.
As we celebrate Earth Day, SMT reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is crucial for mitigating climate change, protecting the environment and human health, promoting sustainable economic growth, and ensuring global security and equity. Our commitment to sustainability is rooted in our core values of Caring, Daring, Sharing.
The only way forward, if we are going to improve the quality of the environment, is to get everybody involved – Richard Rogers
