SMT GB has supplied Collins Demolition with the first Volvo EC500HR high-reach excavator in the UK, supporting the contractor in meeting increasing demands for higher reach, improved safety, and greater operational efficiency on complex urban demolition projects.
The new machine has already been put to work on a major project in Reading, where its extended reach and capability are helping Collins Demolition tackle large structures with confidence and precision.
A Step Forward in High-Reach Demolition
The new Volvo EC500HR represents a significant upgrade from Collins’ previous EC380HR, offering increased reach, improved tool capacity, and enhanced hydraulic performance. With a reach of up to 32 metres using interchangeable arms, the machine allows operators to work safely at height while handling heavier attachments.
Designed specifically for demanding demolition environments, the EC500HR provides the stability and control needed for high-reach work, while delivering the power required for modern demolition applications.
“We first invested in an EC380HR in 2014 to support our demolition work,” explains Scott Craddock, director of Collins Demolition. “It performed exceptionally well, so in 2019 we replaced it with a new EC380HR, which again did not disappoint. This year, the new EC500HR was the obvious choice to meet increasing project demands and the need for greater reach and flexibility.”
Scott adds “The stability of the machine at height is one of its greatest advantages. It gives operators the confidence to work safely within the machine’s operating envelope and, when paired with a 2.8 t tool, achieves the ideal balance of speed and pressure, delivering plenty of power at the tool tip to meet the demands of the job.”
The EC500HR is equipped with advanced technologies such as Volvo Demolition Assist and Smart View, giving operators real-time information on working range and machine stability, while improving visibility and site awareness. These features help support safer and more efficient operation, particularly in complex environments.
Supporting performance On Site
Alongside the machine itself, SMT GB is providing ongoing aftersales support for the first 3 years or 5,000 hours of the machine’s lifecycle as a part of an extended driveline warranty. Operator familiarisation was also delivered to ensure a smooth transition and maximise productivity from day one.
Built for Efficiency and Sustainability
As well as performance improvements, the EC500HR delivers increased efficiency, with optimised hydraulics and engine performance contributing to improved fuel consumption compared to previous models. Longer service intervals and durable components also help reduce downtime and support lower whole-life impact.
A Strong Partnership
The delivery builds on a long-standing relationship between SMT GB and Collins Demolition, with both businesses continuing to invest in solutions that meet the evolving needs of the demolition sector.
The EC500HR provides the flexibility, reach, and performance required to support modern demolition projects, helping Collins Demolition continue to deliver high quality results across a range of applications.
