New Venture – New Volvo

Following a detailed evaluation of the fourteen-tonne excavator market, Lanark-based C L Drainage and Fencing Ltd has opted for a brand new Volvo EC140E.

C L Drainage and Fencing Ltd is a relatively new venture, set up by business partners David Clark and John Longmuir in September 2018. The company specialises in: agricultural contracting, land drainage, fencing, road construction and maintenance on large farms and privately owned estates.

“We both worked for A R Lyon Land Drainage Contractors and have had good experience operating the Volvo fourteen tonner, which we found to be a very productive and reliable machine,” comments David. “When Alasdair passed away, it was his widow who helped us get set up in our new venture by leasing us his EC140E and other equipment. Our first year has been very encouraging, so much so that we took the decision to buy our own fourteen-tonne machine. We looked at the market in detail and had several makes on demonstration, but the Volvo EC140E ticked all of the boxes for us.” he continues.

“Aftersales support is equally important and again, from our experience working at A R Lyon, this came in no short supply from SMT GB. So we felt confident this would continue going forward,” says partner John Longmuir. “For some additional peace of mind, we’ve taken out an extended warranty and SMT GB’s Level 1 CONNECT service agreement.”

The EC140E is powered by a four-cylinder Stage V compliant Volvo engine, developing 122 nett hp. Offering the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication, pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations. This reduces the flow loss through the overload relief valves, whilst maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. When Eco mode is selected, the machine provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions.

The Volvo Care Cab offers a large, roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all-round visibility is enhanced by a 14 vent climate control system, which provides the cab with a pressurised and filtered air supply. An adjustable easy to read LCD colour monitor provides real time information on the machine’s functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings. When it is in operation, the monitor also doubles as a display for the rear-view camera. Hammer/shear hydraulics are offered as standard on the EC140E, as are hose rupture valves on the boom and dipper cylinders. The machine sold to C L Drainage and Fencing Ltd also features proportional hydraulic control, to enhance its performance when being used with the tilting hitch, grading beam and tree shear that have been sourced locally.

C L Drainage & Fencing Ltd is based in Lanark and provides a full agricultural contracting service, including land drainage and fencing, throughout Lanarkshire and Scotland’s Central Belt area.
